As a freelance eLearning developer and instructional designer, I have to be able to give my clients an estimate of the time it will take to design their projects. Like most independent contractors, I charge by the hour, so getting the time estimate right is a critical component of the job!
I use several tools to help me estimate timelines, and probably the most important tool I utilize is my own experience. I also like to consult the research on the subject. The Chapman Alliance has done extensive research on the subject of how long it takes to design learning. All of the statistical data in this short presentation comes from their studies.
For this presentation, I used eLearning software that is new to me: iSpring eLearning software. The software works as an add-on to PowerPoint, so there is virtually no training necessary. They offer a Free PowerPoint to Flash and HTML5 Converter, which is a good way to get familiar with the iSpring interface.
