Welcome to water-wise gardening!

Cacti and succulents are the perfect answer for today's gardeners in Southern California! Drought-stricken SoCal is enduring its third consecutive dry year with no relief in sight. Water conservation is the order of the day.

With their stunning, ever-changing leaf and flower colors and various dramatic textures, cacti and succulents require little or no water and are nearly maintenance-free.

Cacti are succulents (water storing plants). There are other succulents as well, but not all succulents are cacti. Succulents are plants that have evolved special water-storage tissues in thickened or swollen leaves, stems, or roots, as an adaptation to harsh, dry environments. By making the most of scant available moisture, succulents can survive in habitats that are far too arid for most other plants. The rainfall in the regions they naturally occur in is infrequent, so they adapted to be able to survive long periods of drought.
